YouTube’s Jake Paul charged with criminal trespass and unlawful assembly as he denies looting
YouTube star Jake Paul has been charged with criminal trespass and unlawful assembly after he was seem among a crowd of looters at Scottsdale Fashion Square, Arizona, on Saturday night.
Videos emerged on Sunday of Paul, who has 20 million online subscribers, standing outside the mall as it was looted.
Scottsdale police have confirmed that Paul was present after the scene was declared an unlawful assembly.
As Paul,23, entered the mall when it was closed, police say he is also facing charges of criminal trespass.
The YouTube star has taken to Twitter to insist he did not participate in any looting or vandalism.
“To be absolutely clear, neither I nor anyone in our group was engaged in any looting or vandalism.
“For context, we spent the day doing our part to peacefully protest one of the most horrific injustices our country has even seen, which led to us being tear-gassed for filming the events and brutality that were unfolding in Arizona,” claimed Paul.
“We were gassed and forced to keep moving on foot. We filmed everything we saw in an effort to share our experience and bring more attention to the anger felt in every neighborhood we traveled through; we were strictly documenting, not engaging.”
He continued: “I do not condone violence, looting or breaking the law; however, I understand the anger and frustration that led to the destruction that we witnessed and while it’s not the answer, it’s important that people see it and collectively figure out how to move forward in a healthy way. We are all doing the best we can to be helpful and raise awareness; this is not the time to attack each other, it’s time to join together and evolve.”
On Saturday May 20 large crowds gathered at the mall with some breaking into stores and stealing merchandise.
Logan Paul, who is Jake’s older brother and a fellow YouTube star, said anyone that believes his sibling was participating in the looting is a “f***ing moron.”
“To be honest, this one is so f***ing hard for me because I love the kid,” he told his millions of online fans. “I love him, but I don’t always like him. He’s my brother, he’s my family, he’s my blood.”
Logan, 25, continued: “Sometimes I do not understand why he does the things he does as I’m sure he feels about me from time to time.”
“Why he was inside of a mall that was being looted, I have no idea. I talked to him on the phone, he was at a dinner that was next to the mall. It was very unfortunate but very on-brand for Jake Paul to magically be seen at a looting site.
“While I condemn that he was at a looting site and stuck around long enough for videos to be taken to make it look like he was kinda hanging out, you are a f***ing moron if you think my brother was actively participating in looting.”
